Thailand's Ace, Coldplay, and Chaiyen

I asked him forcibly to do the itinerary for us. Lol. Thanks, Ace!

He gave us a list of sites to visit with approximate costs and that’s where we picked our preferred destinations. Credits to @ace.delaserna

Iba siya sa 0 THB for hookups

And our selection! :)

Day 1: Chinatown and Red District

We arrived earlier than scheduled sa Thailand from Kampuchea since we took a midnight sleeper bus instead of the planned morning ride. Imagine, five hours to Mui Ne on the first night, four hours to Ho Chi Minh on the second night,  18 hours to Siem Reap on the third night, three hours of sleep on the fourth night coz sunrise day tour in Angkor Wat,  13 hours to Thailand on the fifth night. Lol

Bes, pagod talaga ako

Si Ace ung taong mahilig maglakad. Dati nagtetake kami ng one hour lunch break walking for almost a kilometer, ending up just buying Mogu-Mogu in a convenience store e meron naman nun malapit sa office, only to go back for another kilometer, me walking on stilettos.

So pagsalubong niya samin, he said that his dorm where we will be staying for 400 baht for three pax or P200 per pax per night (with AC and own toilet and bath lol) is only 15 minutes away, nagduda na ako.

But nilibre niya naman kami ng the best Chaiyen or milk tea I ever tasted for only 25 baht or roughly P40. We rested a bit and ate our late brunch at the dorm’s cafeteria with meals at 40 baht or P60. Brown rice pa.

Before the sun sets, Ace suddenly thought of bringing us to Chinatown. Saya no.

Ferry Ride

Subway Ride

Free Bus Ride

Tuktuk Ride
We tried every means of transportation na ata lol.
(Kahit di mukhang nasa tuktuk kami, no?)

So we went to Chinatown via ferry. It reminds of Binondo but a whole lot bigger, maybe ten times bigger.

Then we took a free bus ride, yes, there are roaming free buses in Thailand, to Cloud 47. Cloud 47 is a club overlooking the city. But since we’re early for the party, we first checked out the red district where people are offering pingpong shows, whatever that is lol.

At almost seven, we decided to go to Cloud 47 only to find out na sarado na pala siya as in sarado for good. So we ate at McDonald's na as if wala nun sa Pinas, but in fairness, iba ung offerings nila, and went home.

Tumambay kami til midnight at the dorm’s lobby just because Ace had to wait for his Vietnamese couchsurfer, Hao.

Day 2: Floating Market and Siam Niramit

We woke up early kasi ang excited ni Tzen, ginising niya kami ng pagkaaga-aga. Seven am ung call time for the floating market. We were there by 6:50 am at si Ace, naisip pa na puntahan namin ung rotunda about two blocks away. Si beh di mapakali. Kinontra ko pa e pinaghintay din kami ng agency for an hour.

Luckily, we shared the same van with a Filipino family based in the Mid East.

We paid another 150 baht for a paddle boat ride on top of the 200 baht for the van and the big boat ride to the floating village. Ang cool, though, to see local scenes where people trade on boats. There was another 45-minute floating village tour with matching talsik talsik ng floodlike water sa face mo. Charot.

Floating Market Troop

Then we headed back to the agency to get tickets for the play Siam Niramit which cost us 900 baht. There was a big waiting area where you can experience Thailand’s culture, food, clothing, arts, but favorite ko ung traditional Thai welcoming nila na may patali sa braso with pa-God bless you. Di ko pa tinatanggal ung tali kahit nanlilimahid na since feeling #blessed talaga ako after the welcoming keme.

Reminds me of T'nalak in T'boli, South Cotabato

The ink is made of wax. :)

Shadow Play

Meron ding cultural dance as pre-show but medyo busy kami that time editing photos for Skechers Go Walk post. Thank you, Skechers! Lol.

The play started. High respect for Thais in terms of maintaining ung infrastructures nila.

We went to Khaosan which is the street party area for late dinner like almost 11 pm. But myself and Ace had to stay behind since he’s meeting Nikki and Ivee for his Jollibee Yumburger. Ung totoo. The girls just arrived from Manila for the Coldplay concert the next day and we had to wait for them til about midnight.

Midnight Walk around Bangkok

I already asked him if we can stay in one place kasi we’d been walking long distances the past days. Si beh, ayaw niya. Isang oras kami naglakad paikot-ikot ng Khaosan, another hour para ipick up ung burger niya, at another hour pauwi while he shares his political knowledge.

Three am na kami nakauwi. Pagod na pagod at antok na antok ako sa three plus hours ng paglalakad.

Day 3: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and COLDPLAY!

We went for a tour to the Grand Palace kung saan nakaburol ung king at kung kelan nakabili na kami ng lunch, saka lang naalala ni Ace na may free pa-laps since mourning ang Thailand for a year for their king’s passing. All for free. And the free food is there every day for a year. Puwede ka mabuhay sa Thailand with little money, relying on free food and free bus rides lol.

We walked towards Wat Pho and the structures made me imagine how colourful Angkor Wat must have been hadn’t it been destroyed by climate change. Sobrang detailed as in they painted every pillar and wall with details. May story pa ung paintings seemingly telling you to do good coz Buddha is everywhere. Parang treat each person as Buddha. Ang galing.

Big Reclining Buddha

Wat Pho Group

I was watching National Geographic the other day and it tells about some palace built in the ancient times where 86 artists were tasked to build statues, them finishing a hundred statues every year for eight years. Di ba ang tiyaga? Eto ba namang friend namin, nakikipagtalo sa Angkor Wat na tinatak lang daw ung carvings sa walls kasi ang intense ng wall carvings like they're in every wall, every floor, every ceiling. E mej di naman perfect ung pagkakapattern like may slight difference per carving kahit mukhang similar.

Anyway, naenjoy naming ung giant reclining Buddha inside one of the temples at muntik makalimutan ung Coldplay. Two pm, we went home to prep for Coldplay!

Heavy traffic all over Thailand on that Coldplay Friday. We took a free bus ride to somewhere, walked very long til we decided to get a tuktuk to take us to the subway, then free shuttles to the concert venue.

Initially, I purchased a Gen Ad ticket na sitting. E nainggit ako when John upgraded to VIP standing. I swapped my Gen Ad ticket for the VIP Standing ticket. We were inside the stadium at pass five pm. Mej puno na kaagad ung VIP standing but since 9 pm pa ung start, naparaanan namin to get to 20 feet away from the stage.

Tiniis ko lahat ng amoy ng kilikili for six hours in total with no food and drinks since bawal magbaon just to stay at some 20 feet away from Chris. Close kami like first name basis.

We were this near!

Eight pm. Natawa ako na naawa kasi on the artist's fourth song, She said, “I’ve got one more song.” Hala, nagchorus ung mga tao, “No!” Grabe.

Saka the stadium turned yellow because of the xylobands.

After the concert ended, nagstrategize pa kami paano ipupuslit ung xylobands kasi must be returned daw for recycling.

Six hours na walang upuan, walang inuman, at walang kainan, naghanap muna kami ng convenience store to buy drinks which was 30-minute walk away. Sobrang crowded sa area, everyone was walking since mahirap to catch a ride home.

Karl: Maglakad tau at *incomprehensible.*
Me: O sige, maglakad muna tau at kumain.
Karl: Sabi ko sumakay.
Me: Ay, di ba kumain?

11 pm natapos ung concert, we were home by 3 am and paid almost 600 baht sa Uber. But definitely worth it! Ang lapit ni Chris Martin!

Day 4: Ayutthaya and Khaosan

Ayutthaya was the old capital of Bangkok until it was burned down by... Di ko maalala, basta old capital siya. We took the 11 am ordinary train for 1 ½ hours under the noon heat. We then rented two tuktuks to show us the different temples and attractions in Ayutthaya.

Di ko tuloy nakita ung face of a Buddha overgrown by a tree puro kasi ako kain.

Nakipray-pray pa kami sa Buddha, walking around the big reclining Buddha three times before you make a wish. Napagod ako sa three rounds.

Three rounds around this Buddha then make a wish/prayer.

Eto pa, may isang grass covered area na they said perfect for conceptual shots so pumunta raw ako sa gitna ng grass. I was about to go down sa slope to try kung water o lupa when someone said, itry ko ng stone muna. Beh, pond siya. Nalunod pa ko kung nagkataon. Ang baho kong uuwi e two hours ung train ride.

This is the swamp.

We went to Khaosan in the late evening to party as in super wild party. Pinipilit pa nila ako uminom e I am uninhibited even without alcohol so party party lang ako dun, drinking water.

Party People!

Funniest part, we tried ung laughing gas. So ibibigay siya sau in a balloon. E parang ayoko na, like napeer pressure lang ako. When they insisted I try it, nung iinhale ko ung gas, nabitawan ko ung balloon. Half of the laughing gas escaped. Sila ung natawa, hindi ako. Tapos ung natira, nagkakandaubo ako everytime I inhale. Ayoko na ulitin lol. Kaya ko naman tumawa nang walang dahilan.

Party stopped when the military came at 2 am. Pero we didn’t go home. The guys got porridge and naghatiran pa so we were home at 4 am over their drunk talks.

Day 5: Chatuchak and the Legit Thai Massage

Ace went to Pattaya beach while we went to Chatuchak for the guys’ shopping errands. Ako pa talaga ung di nagshop. At everytime may itatanong ako, it’s about, “San tayo kakain?”

Magician at Chatuchak

Since namiss ko si Ace and I was reminded of him when I saw an elderly woman selling drinks, I bought two large Yakults.

It’s 180 baht or P270 per hour, way cheaper than Nuat Thai sa Pinas at way malakas si ate masahista.

Ganito kasi:

Naglaundry ung mga kasamahan ko sa dorm. After one hour of waiting sa automatic washing machine, they’re looking for a dryer. Nagtanong sila sa Thai. Due to miscommunication, akala ni Thai, paumpisa pa lang sila. Beh, binasa uli ung damit na patutuyuin na dapat nila. Tapos one hour ung washing time na hirap na hirap sila ifigure out paano istop.

So ayun nga, natakot ako sabihin na be gentle kasi nga baka mamiscommunication ako. Longest 20 minutes. Lol.

The rest was perfect! Kbye.

Day 6: Goodbye, Thailand! :’(

Beh, di jan nagtatapos ung Thailand. Sobrang traffic. Flight namin is 9:35. Nagtaxi kami at 7 am. Nagsubway at 8 am.

In fairness, nung Korea ko, boarding gate closes at 9:10, andun ako by 9:10. Dito sa Thailand, boarding gate closes at 9:20, andun kami at 9:15. Improving by five minutes. Hingal na hingal kami pag-upo sa plane.

Kampuchea Angkor Wat, Fried Ice Cream, and the Central Hostel Staff

Pre-Kampuchea: My bff Ace’s Vietnamese friend, Hao, booked us bus tickets from Ho Chi Minh to Siem Reap. We got the tickets and there was an address but beh, two hours from Ho Chi Minh ung terminal upon checking maps. Siyempre panic kami.

I was hesitant to message Hao coz shy-type talaga ako. Charot. And when I did, he said we were looking for the wrong address. We were looking up using the letter D only. Tignan mo, di ko nga madescribe ung character nila. Mawawala pa kami.

In fairness, nawala pa rin kami. Traffic kasi sa night life street sa Ho Chi Minh so the GrabCar driver dropped us off when we approached the alley towards the terminal na he didn’t know na one way pala. We started walking instead of enduring the traffic if we go around again, started looking for each establishment’s street number, until umabot kami sa park na may sandamukal na buses pero walang katao-tao. May tinry kaming tanungan pero no to English si beh.

Until someone said na nalagpasan na namin ung terminal. Ang dami ko pang conviction na I doubt malagpasan namin kasi I was looking at each establishment’s street number, wala naman ako nakita na ganung number, at pinagdudahan ko pa ung taga-Vietnam e siya nga ung taga-dun. Mali ako. Nalagpasan nga namin. Bida-bida. I was looking din kasi for a bus terminal. E agency pala kami nakabook. Di naman nakaexplain sa ticket. E parang opisina lang ung agency. Sino mag-iisip na bus terminal un. Kkkkk excuses. (Shucks. Haba ng intro.)

It took us an hour of waiting for the midnight bus ride and a flying ipis. Oo, ipis. Ung kuya tour agency staff, Cam On ako ng Cam On which means thank you. Cam On sa ballpen. Cam On sa paregister. Beh, di siya Vietnamese. Cambodian siya. Kaya pala dedma si beh.

So eto na nga, nagboard na kami. Nakakaiyak ung sleeping area. There were double decks on both sides of the bus and each deck is for two pax kahit na single bed lang talaga un. May isang ate Filipina na naging friend namin and she is a solo traveller, beh, naassign siya to sleep beside a Chinese guy. Ung totoo. Di man lang kinonsider ung gender at bawal pa makipagswap kahit may empty beds kasi nagsasakay pala sila on the way. Buti na lang, we were five in the group so at least, I slept beside someone I know.

Smooth naman ung pagcross namin ng borders and we reached Pyongyang by lunch. Nagmessage pa ako sa accommodation na we’ll be in Siem Reap by lunch pero since matagal ung stopover for the immigration and then matagal din ung stopover for the van transfer in Pyongyang, 6 pm kami dumating sa Siem Reap.

But we were happy sa accom. It was Central Hostel and it’s your typical hostel na United Nations ang casting. Tourists from all over. May paswimming pool pa and it was for only $7 or P350 per pax per night on their coed dorm for six. And on that coed dorm, only our group of five stayed so para rin kaming nakaprivate room. And the amenities are even better than Yellow Door Hostel in Tacloban (which charges P500 per head). Nakakasama ng loob ung accom rates sa ibang parts ng Pinas to think pa na Angkor Wat in Siem Reap is a UNESCO Heritage Site but less commercialized ung rates at mas makatarungan with the amenities. Kkkkk Itigil ang kapitalismo. Ganun lol.

Anyway, we were starving kasi we only ate noodles for brunch. We went to the night market and though mej commercialized ung prices, so far, un ung best night market I’ve seen. Organized and ang daming ganap. Ang daming crepes, pancakes, street food, souvenir stores, and FRIED ICE CREAM. Oo, FRIED ICE CREAM. Then I fell in love with Kampuchea, making it my favorite country next to the Philippines. Dahil sa fried ice cream. Charot.

Siem Reap Night Market!

Prepping the Fried Ice Cream

Fried Ice Cream ready to be devoured!

Imagine three fresh fruits of your choice (the best ung strawberry), dudurugin with a spatula and mixed with milk tapos frozen on an ice cream pan. Grabe heavenly.

We arranged a sunrise tour the next day so we woke up at 4 am. We were surprised na the Angkor Wat fee pala is $37 which is almost 2k. But definitely worth it. We hired two tuktuks (their counterpart for tricycle) for our day tour. Sobrang ganda ng roads to Angkor Wat. So raw, provincial pero organized and lined up with trees.

Angkor Wat Entrance

Pak sa entrance ticket that you have to keep the entire tour or else you won't be allowed inside.

Mej disappointed kami sa dami ng tao sa Mui Ne in Vietnam but we said na we should have expected it since we visited ng weekend. Sabi ko, bawi na lang kami sa Angkor Wat since it was a Tuesday so most likely, konti ung tao. Nagkamali ako. There were thousands of tourists like us on a Tuesday. Iba.

Ayaw pa sana makisiksik ni Alexis sa loob nung main temple sa Angkor Wat where the sunrise view they say is the best pero ironically, we stayed sa main temple for three hours kakamodeling. Inip na inip ung tuktuk drivers namin at nasira ung schedule nila for the day.

Raw, unedited sunrise shot :)

We visited another set of temples kung saan pinagod kami ni Alexis sa kakahanap ng Angelina Jolie tree na nasa ibang location pala. Then we had lunch at a carinderia with a price of fine dining. $4 ung regular rice meals nila which is P200. Btw, they use USD more than their own currency which is Riel. Sad fact. Kkkk

Thank you, Skechers Go Walk!

Thank you, Skechers Go Walk! Kahit wala ung sapatos.

Akala mo magthank you uli ako sa Skechers Go Walk? Kkkk
Shot by Karl Presentacion @larkvain

Kunwari malungkot kami sa pinuntahan namin.

Pabebe tau, guys.

Eto ung batang umihi sa harap namin pagkatapos niya mahpose-pose.

Tuktuk!

Kunwari masaya kami, guys.

Nagkawalaan kami on the next temple stop where the Angelina Jolie tree is located. E di ikot ikot sa loob since very interesting for me what happened behind the ruins, nahiwalay ako sa main group. Buti na lang may Flytpack to keep us connected. Lol may endorsement pala.

We decided to go home at around 2 pm coz super init naexhaust kami, bought our bus tickets to Bangkok, and rested. But super memorable din to bike around Siem Reap.

A few hours before our bus ride to Bangkok, we hanged out at the bar of the hostel. Super nice ng staff like they played Filipino songs by Kyla and so on. And super masipag sila kasi they’re working students. Eto pa, the girl staff gave us jasmine garlands before we left. Super nice. They’re like Pinoys to me in terms of how they treat their tourists.

Smells like Sampaguita :)

Vietnam Sand Dunes, Artsy Cafes, and Motorcycles

PreSoutheast Asia Trip: (Lakas makaSoutheast Asia, three countries lang naman talaga kbye – The Alterego)

Out-of-country trips are not part of my bucket list yet as I wanna explore the 81 provinces in the Philippines first but Coldplay – Coldplay bandwagon. Charot. Love ko talaga Coldplay from the first time I heard The Scientist. Kbye.

Since Coldplay tickets in Manila are pricier and mej chaka ung venue, we decided to watch it elsewhere.

We tried to secure tickets for the Korea venue but it got sold out few minutes after the selling period was launched. So when my bff Ace who is based in Bangkok announced that he can help us secure tickets for the Thailand leg, we grabbed the chance.

We then decided to visit Vietnam and Cambodia prior to going to Thailand and so the Southeast Asia trip was set. A 10-day trip in three countries. Sounds fun puwera kung ikaw ung automatically assigned to do the itinerary and book the accommodation. Lol

Our Proposed Itinerary :)

Proposed Budget

Lucky for me too, coz since I have social media influencer friends, we were able to secure our Skechers Go Walk shoes few hours before our flight. Super gaan sa paa and slip-on so swak for on-the-go people like me. Di ba, puwede na kong endorser? Basta nakatalikod.

Tali-talikod lang, bes.
Shot by Karl Presentacion @larkvain

We were three hours early for boarding since takot kami sa trapik sa Maynila at sa mahabang pila sa immigration (na wala naman pala). Tatlong oras tuloy kaming nakasalampak sa boarding gate ng NAIA para makicharge sa mga available na sockets at iensure ang battery charges in preparation for the long hours of travel in between our destinations.

In fairness sa city lights ng Manila on an almost-midnight flight, super warm and cozy niya.

Vietnam!

But ung city lights sa Vietnam, vast of the mainland was dark until the Ho Chi Minh area. Ang dami pang area sa provinces nila ung not lit.

Anyway, we were in Ho Chi Minh airport a little past midnight and since we were bound to wait for the 6 am bus to Mui Ne (famous for its sand dunes), we looked for a spot to tambay in the airport. But come 3 am, we grew a bit impatient kasi we can’t really sleep in the airport comfortably. The guys looked for other options like an earlier trip to Mui Ne or totally cancelling that visit. One of the guys found another option which is to hire a car. So we did. And somehow I regret. Haha

We went out the airport as instructed in the blog. Cab drivers immediately haggled rates to Mui Ne and since I have established the average cost to get to Mui Ne in our itinerary, we agreed on a dollar in excess of the said amount. Prior to the trip, I collected group funds which we always do from July last year (lesson learned from financial kaguluhan during our Cebu trip. Kaloka magcollect every single time may entrance fee sa ganito ganyan. We were 17 in Cebu. Lol).

Ung initial group fund namin sa Vietnam? 2.5 million. 2.5 million Vietnam Dong. Php 7500 lang talaga yun. Ang lakas makamilyonaryo.

I sat at the seat beside the driver and after getting out of the airport, the driver and the cab contractor was asking us the airport fee they paid which is 15000 dong. E sobrang nakakalito ung dami ng zeroes sa paper bills nila at mas nakakalito pa ung pag-e-English nila kuyang manggagantso (charot at di charot sa manggagantso), I took out the 2.5 million dong and tried to figured out how to pay them since I was entrusted bills in big amounts.

Etong intimitridong driver took all those bills from me and he counted them. Wala siyang pagpapahalaga sa personal space lol (Actually, most of them are. Ang hilig nila mangalabit in an invasive manner at kuhanin lang from your hands ung belongings mo kapag nagtatanong ka sa kanila. OA sa invasive haha). Gusto ko sabihin na I can count and he didn’t have to grab the money from my hands pero how to do in Vietnamese. Kaiyak.

We were able to settle the payment (finally!) and off we drove to Mui Ne.

Mej nagpanic ako na nakatulog ako nang mahaba at mej open ung drawstring bag ko with my valuables upon waking up. I checked kung andun ung wallet, phone, and camera ko and was relieved na andun pa sila.

It took us five hours of road trip and sandamukal na toll fees that we had to pay 2.150 million dong kay kuya driver. Lo and behold, when I took out the group funds, we were missing one million dong. Saya no.

So tinatagalog ko tong mga kasama ko and they insisted na baka namisplace ko lang which I highly doubt kasi sinecure ko ung
group funds in a separate big pouch. And I’ve got no proof that kuya driver could have taken it. Sakit, di ba? So we settled to pay kuya out of our own pockets again, dismissing the lost one million dong. Ayoko na humawak ng group funds from then on. :’(

Anyway, highway! I loved Mui Ne. We were lucky with our P350 accommodation, our room with AC and TV and its own toilet and bath with makapangyarihang bidet (oo, mapanakit ung bidet. Ikakadevirginize mo ganun charot) and with a cozy garden outside our room.

Maganda talaga jan. Check booking.com.

Pak sa photoshoot habang may natutulog sa likod.
Shot by Alexis Lim @litratonijuan @sinosijuan

The owner also organized our day tour in Mui Ne and our sleeper bus back to Ho Chi Minh which is six dollars lang for the most comfortable sleeper bus we rode in the entire SEA trip. Take note, we paid 15 dollars each for the private car to Mui Ne, wala pa ung toll fees and nawalan pa kami ng one million dong.

We looked for a place where we can eat breakfast after checking in at 8 am. We passed by a souvenir shop and I bought sakkat, their traditional hat, for 25,000 dong which is about P50. We somehow regretted na di pa kami sa Mui Ne nagshop coz prices are steeper sa Ho Chi Minh itself. The old guy from the souvenir shop pa in Mui Ne was so accommodating compared to the Ho Chi Minh people. Hahahahaha mapanghusga.

Umay ka na ba sa pics ko?
Shot by Alexis Lim @litratonijuan @sinosijuan

We ended up in a hole-in-the-wall since very few stores are open in Mui Ne at about nine in the morning. Siyempre, bida bida ako. Looking at the menu, my friends were pointing what they wanted to order or saying the English term for it. E bida nga ako di ba? I read instead ung Vietnamese term for my order which was written in English alphabet. “One Com Ga.”

Ung owner kinausap ako in incomprehensible foreign language and ang intindi ko, I signed no, I’m okay para di niya na ako kuhanan ng sauce. Si beh, bumalik, nag-abot ng pangalawang sauce. Inabot ko naman kay Karl ung sauce. At sumenyas na I’m okay without sauce. Huhu si beh, bumalik, may sauce uling dala.  O e di, nagsauce ako. Saya no.

But yeah. Super bait ng owner and waitress in that store.

We slept and washed up for our day tour. Day tours in Mui Ne starts at either 4 am (in time for the sunrise on the sand dunes) or 2 pm (since masyadong mainit ung sand at around noon).

First Stop: Fairy Stream

Siyempre dinedma namin sila.

Unfortunately, some paid. We carried our shoes and walked down the stream barefoot.

Second Stop: Fishing Village

Best fishing village I have seen yet. Sobrang ganda ng kulay at amazing ung malalaking batya as boats nila. Makes you wonder paano un lumulutang at di basta-basta tumatagilid.

Third Stop: White Sand Dunes

Our favorite place in Mui Ne, if not in Vietnam! Initially, we wanted to leave kasi ang mahal ng ATV ride until we were able to haggle at around P250 per pax instead of P600 for the one-hour tour on the sand dunes. P250 is for the 4x4 and P600 was for the ATV but they gave us lower rates pa sa ATV which we still declined so they offered na ung 4x4 at a lower rate din. Rule of thumb sa Vietnam: Haggle and walk away if the price is not right.

Before we actually took that rate, we decided na magshoot na lang on the lake nearby since it took us 30 minutes from the fishing village to the White Sand Dunes. Parang sayang kasi if we decide to just leave. Luckily, we initially declined coz as we were walking towards the lake, a herd of cows walked on the highway as in they occupied the entire lane going southbound (charot baka pala northbound un or westbound). Ang lakas makaNational Geographic Channel. There were some 40 cows in that herd.

Then we took the 4x4 ride to the sand dunes.

Red Sand Dunes: Last Stop

We had a flat tire along the way back to the Red Sand Dunes. The trip was another 30 minutes and the flat tire took us additional time to get there. But rewarding naman ung views on the highways of Mui Ne so we weren’t bothered much. The highways are a view by themselves.

But this fab shot by Karl Presentacion @larkvain

We ate dinner and since I’m almost out of dong from the missing one million dong, I looked for a money changer sa Mui Ne. In fairness, may nagpalit ng peso to dong ko at a better rate than I got in Manila.

Funny part. Nagbida-bida ako sa money changer ng pagvi-Vietnamese. I wanted to say thank you but I said “Com Ga” instead of “Cam On.” Com Ga is chicken so takang-taka siguro si kuya money changer bakit ako nag-oorder ng manok sa kanya.

We rested with all the buhangin in our clothes and shoes and prepared for our midnight bus ride to Ho Chi Minh. We got to Ho Chi Minh at 4 am.

Makulay na sleeper bus for $6 on a five-hour trip

Unfortunately, I advised ung accommodation namin ng 8 am arrival.

The night streets of Ho Chi Minh are a bit dark and creepy, we decided to spend the next three hours in McDonald’s. Coz 24 hours. In fairness sa Vietnam, there’s free WiFi in every establishment including ung mga karinderyang kinainan namin.

After getting umay with the tambay at McDonald’s, we booked a GrabCar to our accommodation, left our things, and decided to pick up our bus tickets which were secured by my bff Ace’s Vietnamese friend.

We didn’t buy a local sim card since we’re staying lang in Vietnam for two days and we secured our pocket WiFi c/o Flytpack but since our Flytpack devices only work in Cambodia and Thailand, we settled with the free WiFi sa establishments.

The GrabCar driver dropped us in front of the apartment of Ace’s friend where we will pick up the bus tickets to Siem Reap. Since wala kaming internet or even cellular network number, we decided to shout out her name sa labas ng gate of a ten-storey apartment. We were imitating the Vietnamese accent pa while shouting, “Nguc Thao, Nguc Thao!” Mga pauso ni John.

Realizing it was futile, sobrang squammy namin that we had to walk two blocks at nakiconnect sa free WiFi ng isang gadget store sa kanto. Dun na namin nameet si Nguc Thao to hand us over the bus tickets.

We visited their tiangge which is Ben Tham Market and ate the most satisfying Pho at Pho 24 coz they’re open 24 hours. Ang sarap ng caramel plan nila and the lime juice. Unfortunately, I ordered sugar cane juice na di masyadong masarap.

We agreed to meet our friends who happened to be doing prenuptial shots for a couple in Vietnam. We decided in an artsy building after an hour of rest.

Dahil mali-mali ung geotag sa Instagram nung artsy place, naligaw kami at napadpad sa kung saang-saang kalye ng Ho Chi Minh, asking directions from strangers na after naming sundin, pag nagtanong na kami sa next person, iba na uli ung pinapupuntahan samin.

We ended up in Jollibee kasi wala kaming net or local sim so we were unable to contact Ben and Reg. Super sarap ng spicy chicken nila but they are not fond of rice meals so nakacombo ung chicken with fries. Wala rin silang gravy which they replaced with sweet chilli sauce. But may pacucumber sila on the side. Masarap din ung Mirinda Grapes nila.

With the help of Messenger Live Location, we were able to track ung artsy building, took some artsy shots and tumambay in one of the artsy cafes na matagal magserve. In fairness, ang sarap ng pawelcome tea nila. Sana di na lang pala kami nag-order. Charot.

Entrance to the artsy place. Look up Mockingbird Cafe in Ho Chi Minh for the address but there are a lot of cafes in the building pa.

Ho Chi Minh crew!

We walked towards the night life district of Ho Chi Minh and had some drinks in a sidewalk bar, witnessing how a thief on a motorcycle grabbed a girl’s phone. Lol.

But there’s a couple of things I still love about Vietnam despite the misadventures: The Sand Dunes, Mui Ne and the Provincial People, The Sleeper Bus From Mui Ne to Ho Chi Minh, Pho, and the Roads Full of Motorcycles. :)

Motorcycles everywhere!
